INDIANAPOLIS -

A security guard is blamed for starting a fire at the Community Spirits liquor store at 38th and Capitol Avenue early Thursday morning.  He was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition and later died.

Officials have not identified him, pending notification of the man's family.  An autopsy will determine his cause of death.

Investigators say the guard had worked his normal shift, but just before the store was scheduled to close, he pushed the clerk out of the way and began breaking liquor bottles and setting them on fire.

Fire crews arrived just before 2:00 a.m. and brought the fire under control in 15 minutes.

The security guard was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m.

Community Spirits and Superior Security, the company that employs the guard, share the same owner - Charles Eberhardt. He reported no prior problems with the guard in his two years working for Superior.
