GM, Fort Wayne battle over disclosure of water use

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

General Motors and the city of Fort Wayne are battling over the disclosure of how much water the automaker uses at its Fort Wayne plant.

Attorneys for both sides submitted witness testimony Tuesday with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in a water rate increase case also involving the city of New Haven and Indiana's Office of Utility Consumer Counselor.

The Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/OCLY3A ) GM calls its water use confidential information. GM attorney Bette Dodd says every cost an industrial manufacturer incurs goes into the total cost of producing a product and releasing those details could give an advantage to a competitor.

But Fort Wayne attorney Chris Janak says the city is required to release the water information on its largest water customers every year under various bondholder agreements.
