Gibson County storm packing big hail injures four parade-goers

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -

A southwestern Indiana sheriff says four people were injured when a storm pummeled a town with baseball-sized hail, sending people running for cover during a parade.

Gibson County Sheriff George Ballard tells the Evansville Courier & Press organizers of Oakland City's Sweet Corn Festival decided to go ahead with a parade kicking off the event Tuesday despite a storm warning. He says 20 minutes later the storm arrived, dropping hail up to the size of baseballs on the town about 25 miles northeast of Evansville.

Nineteen-year-old Sonja Cox says "People started pulling everyone off the streets, into their homes and businesses to get them out of the storm, out of the hail."

Ballard says three people suffered minor injuries and a fourth was hospitalized with a foot injury.
