Theft threatens festival

LIGONIER -

A northern Indiana prosecutor says a woman accused of stealing more than $15,000 from a marshmallow festival may have jeopardized the annual event's future.

42-year-old Tamara L. Deel of Ligonier was formally charged Monday with two counts of theft and one count of fraud on a financial institution. She remained jailed Wednesday without bond, pending a court hearing.

Noble County Prosecutor Steven T. Clouse says Deel allegedly stole about $15,000 from Ligonier's Marshmallow Festival in her position as festival chairwoman. He says her alleged actions "could have a devastating effect on Ligonier's Labor Day festivities."

Deel is also accusing of stealing more than $121,000 from a business she worked at between 2008 and 2012.
