Purdue's $33M energy plan nearing final approval

WEST LAFAYETTE -

Purdue University's $33 million plan to shift from coal to natural gas for its power needs is nearing final approval from Indiana regulators.

The State Budget Committee last week approved the funds needed to install a new combined heat and power unit, convert an existing coal boiler to natural gas and improve steam distribution.

Republican Sen. Brandt Hershman of Lafayette tells the Journal & Courier the shift will "reduce the college's environmental footprint while providing top-notch facilities for students."

The funding comes from a canceled $54 million project that would have indefinitely extended Purdue's use of coal for power.

Purdue expects Gov. Mitch Daniels to approve the $33 million project in September. After that, Purdue will need only a state environmental permit to proceed.
