Grissom Reserve Base to dedicate new control tower

GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE -

Grissom Air Reserve Base will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday to mark the completion of a new $7.4 million air traffic control tower.

Construction began in March 2011 on the new tower. It replaces one built in 1969 that's located outside the Grissom boundary.

Grissom says besides being more convenient and secure, the new facility offers more space for modern equipment and requires far less maintenance. It also has an improved safety design making it more resilient in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes.

The 28 military air traffic personnel at Grissom provide control for military aircraft and all civilian and commercial aircraft traveling between Chicago and Indianapolis.

The base is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing.
