GREENWOOD -

Police arrested an Indianapolis man in connection with a reported sexual assault over the weekend at a Greenwood apartment complex.

Police working on a tip located 33-year-old Shawn Corbally at a gas station and took him into custody. Corbally matched a general description of the suspect a woman said broke into her apartment, got on top of her in her bed and threatened her and her children at knife point.

Corbally was preliminarily charged with three felony counts of rape and criminal deviate conduct and felony counts of burglary, confinement, intimidation and residential entry. He is being held at the Johnson County Jail without bond.

As he entered the jail van Tuesday night, Corbally called out, "I'm innocent."

The female victim identified Corbally by distinct tattoos of bricks and a tiger's tail. Residents who say Corbally tried to break into their homes in the same area identified him in a photo array.

"The tattoos are what really made it, as far as people calling and saying, 'Hey, he's got bricks tattooed all the way down his arm," said Assistant Chief Matthew Fillenwarth, Greenwood Police.

Corbally was released from prison in February after serving nearly half of a 25-year sentence for a rape conviction in Marion County. He was currently on probation. Police say he was staying at a location near the scene of the Greenwood assault.

IMPD detained Corbally in another sexual assault case

The weekend before the alleged Greenwood assault, Corbally was detained and questioned by Indianapolis Metro Police in another alleged sexual assault at an Indianapolis apartment complex.

According to an IMPD report, a 57-year-old woman was calling for help from a laundry room in the Jeffersonian apartment complex near 10th and Shadeland on Saturday night, July 21. Police responded just before 10:00 p.m. and the woman told them she had been sexually assaulted.

Multiple witnesses described a man running from the scene, which led police to a nearby trailer park on East Washington, where Corbally's mother lives. Police found Corbally in his mother's trailer, wearing clothing described by the witnesses at the Jeffersonian.  He was detained at that time, according the police report obtained by Eyewitness News, but has not been charged in the case.

Eyewitness News has requested information regarding the IMPD arrest of Corbally. Check back for updates on this developing story.

Residents check security

Before the arrest, people in Greenwood were reviewing the security around their own homes.

Jesse Angel showed off the "charley bar" he now uses for home security after a mother was raped in a nearby apartment Sunday morning.

His girlfriend Samantha Roberts told us she's "scared. I don't want to be attacked in my house."

So at Greenwood's Ashmore Trace Apartments near U.S. 31 and Smith Valley Road, Samantha and Jesse now lock up a window they used to keep unlocked.

"We use our deadbolt lock, every lock in this house we use now," they said.

"I've never felt scared here," says Roberts.

Jesse agrees.

"We've been living here a couple years. We've never felt in danger or anything. It's a shock really," he said.

"I'm still uneasy about it," says Cassandra Dover, a mom. "Nothing really we can do about it, except to take all the precautions that we can."

At her home, it also means using those metal bars to keep the sliding patio doors from being forced open.

"It sort of makes you stop and think, what are you doing to prevent that from happening to your family and what you're doing to keep your family safe," Dover said.

Just before the rape, police say the same suspect tried to break into a home about a mile south in a subdivision. A woman and her teen daughter were home.

Police are investigating a report of an armed sexual assault in Greenwood.

A woman told Greenwood Police she was asleep in her bed at the Ashmore Trace apartment complex on the south side of Greenwood when she was awakened by a stranger on top of her early Sunday morning.

"The suspect was straddling her in bed, holding a knife to her throat, threatening her if she screamed that he would kill her and her children," said Assistant Chief Matthew Fillenwarth, Greenwood Police.

The victim said she was then repeatedly sexually assaulted by the suspect over the next couple hours.

Police describe the suspect as a white male in is 30s, standing between 5'6" and 5'10" tall, weighing 150 pounds, with a mustache, goatee and scruffy facial hair. He was wearing camouflage cargo shorts, light colored tennis shoes and possibly a plaid shirt. The suspect has tattoos of bricks on one arm and what was described as possibly a "tiger tail" on a lower leg.

Investigators believe the same suspect unsuccessfully attempted to gain entry into a nearby residence earlier in the evening. Instead of opening the door, the woman at that home told police she and her daughter saw the man on their back patio.

Steven Cone believes he may have spoken with the suspect in the hours after the attack.

"He was, like, 'Hey, what's going on? How you doing?" Cone said. "(He had) a brick pattern tattoo here on one side and, like, this flame tattoo with, like, a diamond or pyramid on the other side."

Cone and other neighbors spotted the stranger sitting on a rock near their home on Kimbrough Drive.

"When I got home, I saw somebody else kind of looking down the block at this new guy. It's a scary feeling," Cone said.

Investigators are looking at video from security cameras in the area, hoping the suspect is caught on tape.

Police believe the man has local ties or lives near Ashmore Trace and should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to contact Greenwood police at 882-9191 or call in anonymous tips at 865-0300.
