Richmond barn fire spares horses but destroys hay

RICHMOND -

A fire that destroyed an eastern Indiana barn spared a farm family's horses but consumed hundreds of bales of hay that are hard to come by in the state's lingering drought.

Natasha Middleton tells the Palladium-Item that none of her family's horses were injured in Sunday's barn fire in Richmond near the Ohio State line. But Middleton says the fire consumed about 300 bales of hay that had been set aside as feed for the horses.

She says the hay will be difficult to replace in the current drought that's left fields parched across much of Indiana.

Richmond Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Brown says the barn and its contents, including hay and a supply of wood, were a total loss.
