Indiana state fair celebrates 'year of dairy cows'

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

The Indiana State Fair is celebrating dairy cows this year with grilled cheese stands, lemon-flavored milkshakes and the chance for fairgoers to milk a cow.

The fair plans to host "Cowtown USA" where visitors can hand-milk a cow, pasteurize the milk and help make butter, cheese or ice cream. The fair also will sell new products at its Dairy Bar this year.

The fair opens this Friday and runs through August 19. Last year's focus was on soybeans.

The state counts more than 1,500 dairy farms in Indiana with 176,000 cows. Those cows produce roughly 3.5 billion pounds of milk each year. American Dairy Association spokeswoman Jenni Purcell says the dairy industry plays a major role in the state economy.
