Purdue gives scholarships honoring late student

WEST LAFAYETTE -

Three Indiana high school students are the first recipients of a scholarship fund that honors a Purdue University student fatally shocked on the campus five years ago.

Matthew Grabowski of Fort Wayne, Allisan Hoffman of Huntingburg and Stephanie Thiede of Terre Haute will receive $2,000 each for the coming academic year.

Their scholarships come from the Wade Steffey Memorial Scholarship. It was named after the 19-year-old student from Bloomington who was killed Jan. 13, 2007, in a campus dormitory's high-voltage utility room. Steffey's body was found there two months later.

Purdue created the scholarship endowment as part of a settlement with the Steffey family. Students eligible for the scholarship must be from Indiana and plan to attend Purdue.
