Man dies after entering retention pond to cool off

INDIANAPOLIS -

Authorities in Indianapolis say a man who entered a retention pond to cool off while fishing has died.

Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Rita Burris says divers found the man Saturday afternoon in the pond in a housing addition on the city's southeast side.

A friend who was fishing for catfish with the man told firefighters that they had been drinking before the man went into the water. The witness said his friend told him that he wanted to cool off in the pond.

Burris says two area residents tried to rescue the man but had to turn back when the water became too deep and they couldn't see him.

She says it is unclear why the victim went under the water.

Authorities didn't immediately release the victim's identity.
