Officer Matt Fox had surgery early Saturday morning to remove a bullet which was lodged in his forehead. He has been upgraded to good condition and is expected to recover.
Fox has been with the department since 2007 and trains fellow officers on proper traffic stop protocol. Saturday morning he was reminded of just how dangerous his job is.
Early Saturday morning, Fortville K-9 Officer Matt Fox did not realize the traffic stop he was about to make near Carroll Road was anything but routine.
"The vehicle refused to stop, a pursuit ensued to the 7800 block of Highview, where the officer was ambushed and shot," explained IMPD Officer Kendall Adams.
The suspect, 27-year-old James Lockhart, fired multiple shots, hitting Fox in the hand and head.
Hancock County Sheriff Mike Shepherd believes Lockhart was shooting to kill.
"My officer who was first on the scene said there were three shots in the windshield where Officer Fox's face was and then its believed that he walked up to the side and shot through Officer Fox's window. It was determined that ten rounds were fired all together," said Shepherd.
Lynn Cole couldn't believe there was gunfire in her quiet neighborhood.
"I could hear pop, pop, pop, pop and then pop, pop. So about three or four shots then a pause and about three or four more shots," she said.
Fox was able to describe the white Volvo to responding officers from IMPD and Lawrence. After a brief search, they caught up with him several miles away.
