CROWN POINT -

An Indiana National Guardsman killed in an attack in Afghanistan was remembered as a man devoted to his family and country.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports that hundreds of mourners attended the funeral for Spc. Sergio Eduardo Perez Jr. at the Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church on Friday.

The 21-year-old soldier died July 16 in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan after rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire hit the vehicle he was in. Twenty-year-old Spc. Nicholas Andrew Taylor of Berne also was killed. They were members of a bomb-clearing unit from the Valparaiso-based 713th Engineer Company.

Perez's sister Candice Perez said Perez was her personal trainer, bodyguard and best friend, all in one. She says he would help anyone he could.
