First Lady Michelle Obama led the US delegation at the Olympics Opening Ceremony Friday night. Her attendance at the four-hour event came at the end of a busy day that included an audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Eyewitness News was there when the first lady began her day with athletes from Team USA.

Michelle Obama got a standing ovation when she arrived at for breakfast with about 50 members of the US Olympic team at the US training facility at the University of East London.

"I can't tell you how amazing it is for me to leading the delegation to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games," she told the group.

Flag bearer Mariel Zagunis was in attendance, and the Notre Dame grad and fencer is an example of how in 24 hours an athlete at the Olympics can become a household name.

"We are all proud of you all. We really are. You have a country back home who is rooting for you every single second so you have already won," Obama said.

She told the athletes to understand their impact multiplies when the world is watching.

"You never know who you are inspiring. You just never know. From a family like ours to the south side of Chicago to young athletes on the south side of Chicago who are going to pick up a soccer ball or a start running after watching something you all do...I know...so you never know who you are going to inspire," she said.

Tamika Catchings and other members of the women's basketball team took advantage of the photo op afterward.

"Take it in. This only happens every few years so try to have fun, try to breathe a little bit. But also win, right?! In the end, winning is good!" she said.

No medal count predictions from the US Olympic Committee. Team USA did win the most medals in Beijing, but China took the most gold. It's also interesting to note that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is also in London with his wife Ann, attending the Olympics and visiting with the British prime minister.
