Tours of formerly submerged Indiana town offered

Posted: Updated:
ANDREWS -

The state Department of Natural Resources is offering two supervised tours to a town that has reappeared in a northeastern Indiana reservoir after being submerged for nearly half a century.

Tours of Monument City in Salamonie Reservoir are being offered the next two Sundays at 5:30 p.m. The city was submerged when the reservoir was created in 1967, but the drought has revealed its remnants. The DNR had previously closed access to the area to protect artifacts until state and federal archaeologists could inspect the area.

Visitors wanting to learn more about the site can begin at the Salamonie Interpretive Center in Andrews, 40 miles southwest of Fort Wayne, for an orientation program, then follow leaders to the Monument City site.
