INDIANAPOLIS -
Federal prosecutors say an Indiana man smuggled assault rifles to a drug cartel operating in Texas and Mexico and returned with marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine that he dealt across southern Indiana and western Mexico.
They said Thursday that 35-year-old Hermion Torres of Seymour faces conspiracy and firearms charges and three associates are charged with purchasing the weapons for him. Torres has been held in federal custody since early June. A message seeking comment was left with his attorney.
They say Torres arranged the purchase of 29 assault rifles and 15 rifles from gun dealers in the Indianapolis area and delivered them to members of the Gulf Cartel.
A judge has set an Aug. 13 trial date in Evansville for the four defendants. They're named in an indictment returned May 30.
