12,000 customers still without power following storms

GARY -

Nearly 12,000 northwestern Indiana homes and businesses remain without power following a wave of severe thunderstorms that buffeted the region with winds as high as 75 miles per hour.

Northern Indiana Public Service Company reported Wednesday morning that about 11,800 of its customers mostly in the Gary, Merrillville Hammond and Valparaiso areas remained without service.

Affected residents will face near 100-degree temperatures Wednesday without air-conditioning or fans.

NIPSCO says crews have restored power to more than 50,000 customers since Tuesday's storms, which it calls some of the most damaging to impact the utility in the past five years. Tuesday's storms topped utility poles, knocked down electrical lines and caused other damage.

The company expects most customers to have their power restored by Wednesday evening, but other repairs won't be completed until Friday.
