External audit of $526M in tax mistakes pending

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

Indiana budget leaders expect to get a better idea of how to prevent further mistakes like those that led to $526 million in state revenues being misplaced.

Accounting firm Deloitte will tell the State Budget Committee what an audit of the state's tax collecting agency would look like but answers still could be a long way off. The bi-partisan group is meeting Wednesday at the new Manchester College pharmacy school in Fort Wayne.

The meeting follows a pair of big tax mistakes discovered by the state in the last year. A state budget auditor discovered last December that $320 million in corporate tax collections had gathered untouched in a state account over four years. The State Budget Agency discovered in April that it owed Indiana's counties $206 million.
