HANCOCK COUNTY -
Police have detained a male driver after a ten-minute chase that reached 70 mph in Hancock County. According to police, the 30-year-old Columbus man was suffering from dangerously low blood sugar.
Indiana State Police followed the pickup truck eastbound on I-70 from the 88 to the 112 mile marker after calls at around noon from other drivers. They told police the pickup truck driver was all over the road, striking concrete barrier walls and sideswiping two vehicles.
Trooper Luke Barrier attempted to stop the 2004 Chevrolet pickup at the 98 mile marker, but the driver did not stop. The pickup continued eastbound into Hancock County even after striking stop sticks and deflating a tire.
Finally near the 112 mile marker, the pickup went off the roadway, driving through grass area of a rest park. The truck went through a fence and came to a stop near the bus barn at the Eastern Hancock High School. The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Police took Curtis Axsom, 30, of Columbus, into custody, and he was immediately placed into the care of medical personnel. His blood sugar was reportedly at a dangerously low level. He was transported to Hancock Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
No injuries were reported from this incident.
The Hancock County Prosecutors Office said Axsom will not face criminal charges.
