Southwestern Indiana officer shoots man during domestic call

Posted: Updated:
PETERSBURG -

State police say a southwestern Indiana police officer shot and seriously injured a Petersburg man who allegedly pointed a rifle at the officer during a domestic dispute call.

State Police Sgt. Todd Ringle says 37-year-old Michael Woodland was airlifted Monday night to an Evansville hospital where he underwent surgery for serious injuries.

He says that when Petersburg office Chad Tharp arrived at a home to investigate a domestic dispute call Woodland walked out carrying a rifle pointed toward the ground. Ringle says Tharp shot Woodland when the man began raising the rifle toward Tharp after being told to drop the weapon.

Neither Tharp nor a woman and a child who were inside the home were injured.

State police are investigating the shooting.
