Wayne Township Fire investigators are working to determine what caused a fire that sent one man to the hospital overnight.

The fire started around 11:15 p.m. in the 3500 block Farnsworth in the Maywood Section of Indianapolis.

Jeffery Shearer and Mary Shearer rent the home.  She told firefighters he woke her up and they got out of the house.

Firefighters found the single story house with fire coming out the front. They brought it under control in about 15 minutes.

Jeffery Shearer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Wishard for further evaluation. Mary Shearer was not injured.

Mary said they had a smoke detector in the home, but she was unsure if it operated.

The Shearer's lost most of their personal belongings and do not have insurance. Fire investigators did not provide an overall damage estimate.

They are being assisted by Wayne Township Victims Assistance.
