Private schools with vouchers saw test scores fall

INDIANAPOLIS -

A newspaper's analysis of the latest wave of ISTEP scores shows that private Indiana schools that accepted voucher students last year saw their passing rates fall.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports that it analyzed the ISTEP test scores of 189 private schools with voucher students that administered the statewide test and had 2011 data for comparison. Its analysis showed that those schools' passing rate for both math and English fell to 85 percent this year, down from 86 percent the year before.

Indiana lawmakers passed legislation in 2011 giving the state the nation's broadest voucher program.

School Choice Indiana executive director Lindsey Brown says the group "fully expected" that some private schools taking on new students would see slight drops in their scores.
