Gary's latest homicide sparks anti-violence rally

GARY -

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson wants her city's latest homicide to be the final one this year.

The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report Freeman-Wilson led a rally against violence Saturday, two days after 26-year-old Sam Lott died in a hail of gunfire and became Gary's 22nd homicide victim of 2012.

She and other speakers asked for the community's support in halting the violence. Freeman-Wilson says a partnership of government officials and churches, schools and other organizations needs to focus on getting involved in neighborhood watch and block clubs and report when something seems wrong.

U.S. Attorney David Capp says crime in northwest Indiana "is not a Gary problem, or a Hammond problem or an East Chicago problem. He says "it's a regional problem and needs a regional approach."
