Large chasm between 'right' and 'freedom' in Indiana

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Right-to-work and "freedom to work" proposals may sound similar, but they're far apart on the political spectrum.

The right-to-work law Indiana legislators approved this year bans unions from collecting mandatory representation fees. A "freedom to work" proposal Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard vetoed would have banned businesses from blacklisting hotel workers.

The split shows how critical wording is to winning in politics.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis communications professor Kristina Sheeler says that's because politicians make their messages "strategically ambiguous" with the hopes of attracting as many supporters as possible.

She says anything talking about a "right" or a "freedom" is clearly designed to evoke an emotional response from Americans.
