Columbus trail count to help support expansion

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS -

Columbus parks officials plan to count the number of people using the city's People Trails as part of an effort to expand the network.

The count will begin soon and will include information on what residents use the trails for and how their use of the system has affected their health.

The Columbus Park Foundation has launched a yearlong campaign to raise $1 million. The Republic reports that the campaign and an additional $4 million will pay for an expansion of the trails that will include bike routes and sidewalks by 2017.

April Williams of the city's parks and recreation department says accurate numbers recorded over several months will help the department generate support for the 21 miles of blacktopped trails for walkers, runners, cyclists and others.
