Deluge sends band running, damages equipment

MUNCIE -

A downpour that swept a central Indiana fairgrounds following weeks of drought sent high school band members running for cover and ruined some of their musical equipment.

Richmond High School band director Terry Bettner tells the Palladium-Item that "the heavens opened up" Thursday night as his band was waiting to perform at the Delaware County Fair Band Contest in Muncie.

Students ran for cover in nearby buildings, but Bettner says one of the band's electronic speakers and several timpani drum heads were ruined by the heavy rains.

He says the drenching also left students with damp uniforms that will need to be cleaned with great care.
