Man convicted in officer's killing set for release

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

A northern Indiana man convicted in the 1983 shooting death of a town marshal is set for release from prison later this month.

Forty-seven-year-old William Spranger will be freed July 29 after serving 29 years for the November 1983 killing of William Miner Jr., who was the town marshal in Avilla, about 15 miles north of Fort Wayne

Spranger was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, but his sentenced was set aside on appeal and he was re-sentenced to 60 years.

Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison says the agency has notified police departments, Mirer's relatives and others about Spranger's upcoming release.

He tells WANE-TV people need to know that a man who committed "a very serious crime, is coming back out into their community."
