Hammond removes eyesores, razes vacant properties

Posted: Updated:
HAMMOND -

Hammond officials hoping to rid the city of eyesores are ramping up their efforts to demolish abandoned structures.

The city is using funding from Horseshoe Casino to raze an average of 100 dilapidated properties each year for the past four years.

Chief of Inspectors James Callahan tells The Times in Munster that about 90 percent of the vacant buildings have been used as rental properties. The city also has demolished vacant businesses.

The demolitions cost $8,000 to $12,000 per structure.

City Attorney Kris Kantar says Hammond began its push in 2008 after officials saw the success South Bend had with its program.
