New manure rules vex some hog, cattle producers

Posted: Updated:
DELPHI -

Indiana's 1,600 pig and cattle producers are expressing frustration over new state rules that limit how much manure they can spread on the ground and the times of year they can apply it.

The rules took effect July 1. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says they are designed to protect the environment and prevent fish kills.

But a Purdue Extension official says many small and medium-sized operations are feeling financial pressure from the new rules.

Northwind Pork production manager Jay Gruber tells the Journal & Courier that it's impossible to keep up with changing regulations as he tries to run his Rensselaer operation.

IDEM has 11 state inspectors who survey each operation twice every decade.
