INDIANAPOLIS -

Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that injured a nine-year-old child Friday evening.

Officers were called to the reported shooting in the 3600 block of Sherman Forest Drive around 8:20 p.m. Friday. Police tell Eyewitness News a group of 25-30 children were playing in or near the street in the Villages of Mill Crossing Apartments when an older model gray car pulled up and an occupant of the vehicle got out and opened fire.

The child, who was visiting the apartment complex, was struck in the lower back. He was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in good condition.

Witnesses told police the shooter was a heavy-set black male with braids in his hair and a gray t-shirt.

"That's our goal in trying to solve the case is to find out why this happened," said IMPD Ofc. Kendale Adams. "(It) seems like we have a lot of witnesses in the community cooperating with the police, so all of that is a positive sign."

The suspect vehicle was last seen driving toward 38th Street, before turning left on Sherman Drive. Investigators are still looking for suspects and are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
