Indiana man who fled fatal boating crash sentenced

Posted: Updated:
BLOOMINGTON -

A Bloomington man has been sentenced to two years in jail for leaving the scene of a boating crash on Lake Monroe that killed a woman and her young grandson.

A Morgan County judge Friday also sentenced 21-year-old Winston Wood to two years of home detention and two years of probation. Wood also was fined $1,000 and ordered to obtain mental health treatment.

The Herald-Times reports Wood was operating a ski-boat which collided head-on with a fishing boat in June 2010. The collision killed 51-year-old Susan Collier of Bedford and 8-year-old Gage Pruitt of Williams and injured Collier's husband, James "Rusty" Collier.

Wood said he was overcome by a "terrifying panic" after seeing Susan Collier's dead body floating in the water, but it was wrong to flee.
