Back to school means changes for some area school districts

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

School starts in just a couple of weeks and for many districts, it is a year of change.

Several IPS schools are under renovation, and that's why students will be moved to another location when classes start. Changes are also happening in Franklin Township. You might recall the controversy over that district's decision to forego bus service. This year, busses are back in that school district. They are also under the leadership of a new superintendent, and like many districts in Marion county are under a new balanced schedule.

Probably the biggest change is in Beech Grove schools where construction is still going on at the high school to accommodate a new concept in their curriculum, which now supports 4 academies and focuses on life sciences.

Superintendent Paul Kaiser said, "Beech Grove High School has embarked on agriscience in an urban setting. (We are) one of the few schools in the Midwest to offer this. (There are) some in Chicago and a couple in IPS, but we believe it's the area to go into is in careers in life sciences. Currently we have 120 students enrolled in intro to agriculture, life science, natural science in addition to animal science this year."

Beech Grove has a partnership with Purdue and FFA and students from other school districts can enroll in the program. The buildings might not be complete by the start of school in two weeks, but the curriculum will start.
