INDIANAPOLIS -

A woman fleeing police in a car reported as stolen was critically injured early Friday near the intersection of Shelby and Troy.

According to police spokesman Anthony Schneider, IMPD officers attempted to stop a gold 2001 Dodge Stratus near the intersection of Harding Street and Howard Street shortly after 12:45 a.m.  The car had been reported stolen a few days earlier.

Police say the driver, Erica Shelton, refused to stop and fled southbound on Harding Street, then eastbound on Troy.  Police shut down their emergency equipment and stopped their pursuit after losing sight of the car near South Meridian Street, but kept driving east on Troy, where they found the car crashed into a utility pole and smoking just past Shelby Street.

Shelton was ejected and suffered serious injuries.  She was transported to Wishard Hospital in critical condition.

The Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was called to the scene to investigate.

Police say Shelton currently has active warrants for Felony Dealing Methamphetamine and Felony possession of Methamphetamine.
