Gregg calls for early child education program

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg wants the state to begin educating students before kindergarten and help parents pay for childcare.

Gregg said Thursday he backs starting a program for 4-year-olds similar to one run by Wisconsin. He also says he wants the state to create an income tax credit to offset child care costs and permanently fund full-day kindergarten.

Gregg is running against Republican Mike Pence and Libertarian Rupert Boneham in November's election.

Pence spokeswoman Christy Denault said the Republican congressman supports "community-driven partnerships" and that strong families make the best pre-schools.

Lawmakers approved a funding boost for full-day kindergarten earlier this year after state officials discovered $320 million in misplaced corporate tax collections.
