Indiana expands list of counties struck by drought

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman is increasing the number of counties that can qualify for federal aid because of the state's continuing drought.

Skillman added 14 counties to the list of natural disaster areas around the state Wednesday. Those counties and the 11 bordering them can now apply for assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Farmers will have eight months from the disaster declaration to apply for federal loans.

Some counties have placed restrictions on water use already. The state has asked those using 100,000 gallons of water or more daily to cut their use by 10 percent to 15 percent because reservoirs are being depleted.

State homeland security officials are scheduled to deliver an update on the drought conditions Thursday afternoon.
