Carmel: Some residents must heed water ban

Posted: Updated:
CARMEL -

Residents of an Indianapolis suburb that has avoided bans on outdoor watering because its water is supplied by underground aquifers are finding their grass won't always be greener.

Carmel officials said Wednesday that about 3,000 of Carmel Utilities' 27,500 customers still receive water supplied by Citizens Water and must follow a ban on outdoor water usage imposed by the utility because of the prolonged drought gripping the state. Those whose water comes from the aquifers are exempt.

City spokeswoman Nancy Heck says officials are reviewing aquifer levels regularly and will reassess the need for water restrictions if drought conditions worsen.

Residents who have private wells aren't affected.

All Carmel residents have been asked to take voluntary conservation steps in case the city needs to supply water to other communities.
