State: I-69 extension should open by year's end

WASHINGTON -

State highway department officials say they're confident that contractors will meet the target of having the first major stretch of the Interstate 69 extension though southwestern Indiana open by the end of this year.

Construction work is under way on a nearly 70-mile stretch of the highway's route from near Evansville to just outside the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center southwest of Bloomington.

Highway department spokeswoman Cher Elliott tells the Washington Times-Herald that construction on most of that section is from 50 percent to 75 percent completed.

Contractors have had few weather delays, although Elliott says the agency will have to talk with water providers if this summer's drought continues because of the large amount of water needed for the highway's concrete.
