Jada Pinkett Smith: fighting against human trafficking

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

It has been nearly 150 years since President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. But actress and activist Jada Pinkett Smith says in some areas, the "old monster" of slavery "is still with us." And she is urging Congress to do more to fight human trafficking both in the U.S. and abroad.

The actress testified before a Senate committee on Capitol Hill yesterday, saying she plans to launch her own campaign to raise awareness of the amount of human trafficking and slavery still going on.

She says while it may not cost a lot of money to fight such activity, the costs of allowing it to continue "are much higher" - because it robs people of freedom.

Pinkett Smith was joined at the hearing by her husband actor Will Smith and their daughter Willow - who the actress says first schooled her about the practice of human trafficking.
