Indiana panel hears complaints about school transfers

INDIANAPOLIS -

Educators and students say some of Indiana's public schools are accepting only the brightest students from among the pupils seeking transfers to a new school.

Several people told a legislative education commission Monday that some school districts require students seeking transfers into their district to have a minimum grade-point average and to have passed the ISTEP+ test. They said those schools are rejecting kids with special education needs or those with a history of discipline problems.

The Journal Gazette reports that Republican state Rep. Kevin Mahan of Hartford City says "no school taking public tax dollars should be able to pick and choose."

He says once a district opens its enrollment for transfers the process should be either through a first-come, first-served or by a lottery system.
