INDIANAPOLIS -

Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock is outraising his Democratic opponent but also has a larger fundraising gap to close.

Mourdock collected $1.8 million between April and June and had roughly $900,000 left in the bank as of July 1. Democratic candidate Joe Donnelly reported raising $925,000 in that same period and holding roughly $1.4 million in the bank.

Mourdock beat longtime U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar in Indiana's May Republican primary.

National groups spent heavily in the Republican primary both for Lugar and Mourdock. Some groups have already begun paying for campaign commercials in the general election battle. The Republican-aligned Crossroads GPS spent $620,000 on an ad attacking Donnelly. The national Democratic Senate campaign committee has sent $250,000 to Indiana for an ad blasting Mourdock.
