Indiana bikers arrive in slain officer's hometown

TERRE HAUTE -

Dozens of police officers and others ended the first week of a fundraising bicycle ride around Indiana by arriving in the hometown of a slain officer to whom this year's ride is dedicated.

The riders in the 10th annual Cops Cycling for Survivors trip arrived at the Terre Haute Police Department on Sunday as they ended that day's 98-mile ride from Kentland in northwestern Indiana.

The Terre Haute stop came days after the one-year anniversary of city Officer Brent Long's shooting death. He was killed as he and other officers tried to arrest a wanted man.

Terre Haute Officer Pete Horstman tells the Tribune-Star he's riding with the leash Long used with his police dog wrapped around his shoulders to remember one of his best friends.
