Commission blocks plan to demolish northern Indiana theater

SOUTH BEND -

A plan to demolish a century-old South Bend building to make room for more parking has been put on hold at least temporarily.

The South Bend Tribune reports the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County has asked city council to grant local landmark status to preserve the former Avon Theater. The St. Joseph County Public Library's board voted last month to tear it down.

The action by the commission protects the building from demolition for six months. The library still owns the theater but can't demolish or significantly alter it during that period without the commission's permission.

Commission Director Catherine Hostetler says the Avon is the only vintage building remaining on the block and is the only small theater still standing downtown.
