Anderson eyes old bridge for trail system use

Posted: Updated:
ANDERSON -

A damaged Madison County bridge that has been closed to traffic since 2000 could find a new use under a plan envisioned by Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith.

Smith wants to dismantle and move the 102-year-old structure and use it as a pedestrian bridge in the White River trail system.

The bridge is one of 63 historic spans statewide targeted for preservation or relocation under a program developed by the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.

The Herald-Bulletin reports the county hopes to replace the span in 2014.

Smith says figuring out how to dismantle and move the structure could be a challenge but thinks it's worthwhile to preserve the craftsmanship of a bygone era.
