Indiana contractors mixed over looming defense cuts

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana defense contracts fell 50 percent from 2008 to 2010, and with cuts in congressional defense funding looming, insiders paint a mixed picture for the industry in this state.

The Indianapolis Star reports most of that drop came in late 2010 when the Army stopped ordering Humvee armored vehicles from South Bend-based AM General.

Chief operating officer Carlos Gaitani of Bedford electronics contractor Tri Star Engineering now says "everybody's scared of what the future holds."

Others say Indiana might weather Pentagon cuts better than most other states.

Project director Ryan Metzing, of Aerospace and Defense Initiatives, an arm of Indiana advanced manufacturing and logistics promotional group Conexus, says Indiana has "a lot of different types of contractors, with different functions and in different parts of the state."
