Official: Remove job barriers for ex-offenders

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

An Indianapolis city councilman who says many residents in his districts are ex-offenders who can't find work because of their convictions wants to remove barriers to employment.

Councilor Vop Osili says he would like to ban use of boxes on job applications that require prospective workers to say whether they've been convicted of a crime.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports that cities such as Detroit and Philadelphia have banned use of the boxes in some hiring. Detroit's ban applies to city hiring plus contractors and vendors doing business with the city. Philadelphia applies the ban to all employers.

Democratic council President Maggie Lewis said she's open to the idea but isn't sure the council should try to pass a ban that applies to all Indianapolis employers.
