Three routes proposed for highway near Chicago

LOWELL -

Officials have released details on three possible routes for a proposed highway linking Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana and Interstate 55 in Illinois south of Chicago.

The Illiana Expressway routes are included in a draft environmental impact statement released by the Indiana and Illinois highway departments.

One route would go from I-55 a few miles south of Joliet, Ill., and skirt the northern side the proposed airport at Peotone then join I-65 north of Lowell, Ind. Another route runs mostly parallel from south of Lowell to I-55 near Wilmington, Ill. The third route mixes the two.

Lowell Town Councilman Craig Earley tells The Times of Munster he's glad a more southern route is included as an alternative to preferred corridor that met with protest from residents earlier this year.
