Indiana woman sentenced to prison in baby theft attempt

TERRE HAUTE -

A western Indiana woman who acknowledged that she stabbed a couple while trying to kidnap their month-old son has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

A Vigo County judge sentenced 36-year-old Stephanie Foster Friday after hearing arguments over how long she should spend in prison.

Judge Michael Lewis said the Terre Haute woman's mental illness wasn't significant enough to offset the fact that she had plotted the crime.

Foster pleaded guilty May 14 to a felony charge of armed robbery resulting in serious bodily injury in the June 2010 attack. In return, prosecutors agreed to drop charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery.

Prosecutors say Foster faked pregnancy after a miscarriage and stabbed Ashley Speer during an attempt to steal Speer's son and pass him off as her own.
