INDIANAPOLIS -

Fire crews put out a double residence fire in the 1100 block of North Tacoma on the east side early Thursday morning.

A woman woke up to smoke in the house.  The first engine on the scene at 3:39 a.m. found fire burning through the back of the houses.

A man and woman both smelled smoke, called 911, and were able to get out of each side of the duplex without injuries.

Seven children live in the duplex, but none were home at the time of the fire.  Victims assistance is relocating both families.

The cause is under investigation.

Damage estimate is $40,000.
