Smoking banned during Johnson County Fair

Posted: Updated:
FRANKLIN -

All smoking is being banned during a central Indiana county's fair because of the tinder-dry conditions caused by this summer's drought.

The Johnson County commissioners are prohibiting anyone from smoking or bringing smoking materials onto the fairgrounds property in Franklin. Events for the county fair start Saturday and run through July 21.

Sheriff's chief deputy Randy Werden tells the Daily Journal that smoking poses a fire danger because there is so much dry grass around the fairgrounds in the city about 20 miles south of Indianapolis.

All but a handful of Indiana's 92 counties have open burning bans in place, but a state listing shows Johnson County as the only one with limits on smoking.
