Barclays ex-CEO denies misleading UK inquiry

LONDON -

The former chief executive of Barclays has disputed claims that he gave misleading answers to a parliamentary committee which is investigating a rate-fixing scandal.

Bob Diamond, who resigned as chief executive of Barclays last week, rejected claims that he had been less than truthful in testimony to the House of Commons Treasury Commitee.

Committee member John Mann on Tuesday charged that Diamond had "serially misled" the panel.

Responding Tuesday night, Diamond said such claims were "totally unfair and unfounded."

Diamond told committee chairman Andrew Tyrie that he looked forward "discussing this issue with you further if you wish to do so."

Key issues are Diamond's assertion that he was unaware that regulators raised any concerns about his appointment as chief executive or about the culture of the bank.
